Configuring Terminal Services on Windows XP

Configuring Remote Computer

  • Log in to the host as an administrator.
  • Open Control Panel and select System.
  • Select the Remote Sessions tab, check Allow users to connect remotely to this computer, and click Select Remote Users.

  • Click Add and select users that will be authorized to connect to this computer remotely.

Client Configuration

If the clients are running Windows 95/98, Me, NT, 2000/2003, their configuration includes the following steps.

Download the latest version of the Remote Desktop Connection Client from the official website: Remote Desktop Connection Software Download site. Then install the client on all computers on the network which will be used for terminal access.

If the clients are running Windows XP, client software is most likely already installed. To run this software, select Start->All Programs->Accessories->Communications->Remote Desktop Connection. Otherwise, the client utility may be installed using a disk containing Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition.

Initiating a Session

To initiate terminal access, start the client software on the host.

In the resulting dialog, enter the IP address or the name of the server with the terminal services installed and click Connect. Use the standard Windows authorization dialog to enter your user name, password, and domain (if required) and click OK.

This will display the desktop which can be used to access the remote server's programs, files, and settings.
